The wine has a dark ruby color. The nose opens with an explosion of dark fruit, blackberries and currants followed by more complex, enveloping notes of wet slate, mushroom and leather. On the palate, this is a classic Mt. Veeder Cabernet, with a refined, firm structure, enticing and vibrant mid palate and an extremely long, powerful finish.

VINEYARD

Our Mount Veeder property was first purchased and planted to Champagne varietals in the early 1970s. Over the last 20 years, the majority of the property has been replanted to Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard is situated in the Mayacamas Mountains on the Western edge of the Napa Valley on steep southern aspects at altitudes between 750 and 1250 feet. Cooled both by the altitude and proximity to the San Pablo Bay, the area boasts the longest growing season of all the Napa Valley AVAs. The vineyard’s well-drained, sedimentary soils produce vibrant and mineral-driven Cabernet Sauvignon, characterized by intense black currant notes and firm, sandy graphite structures.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

2017 should be divided into two components: before and after Labor Day. The year started with extended rainfall, followed by a mild Spring, resulting in extended flowering with little shatter. Temperatures remained mild through the growing season up until August, which allowed for great flavor development in line with sugar accumulation. During Labor Day weekend, a heatwave kicked harvest into high gear. Sugar levels returned to normal when the weather cooled. All of our fruit was fermenting at the winery by October 8th—minus half of our Mount Veeder yield, which remained on the vine. On October 9th, a wildfire hit the Napa/Sonoma regions, ending the vintage for Newton. We did not pick any of the remaining fruit from Mount Veeder.

VINIFICATION

This single vineyard wine features fruit from blocks 203, 205, and 212 with an average vine age of 18 years from our Mount Veeder estate. The bunches were hand harvested, muanually selected, destemmed and optically sorted to ensure each individual berry met our exacting standards. Fermentation was done in separate, small batches to enhance skin contact and gently extract the phenolics. After malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged for 12 months in french oak barrels; 60% new and returned to barrel for another 6 months of aging after blending.
