Inky, brooding, and deep purple color foreshadows a wine with strong aromas of boysenberry, blueberry, and violets. Layered notes reminiscent of roasted coffee, vanilla, and dark chocolate also come to mind as the wine decants in glass. In concert with these aromas, is a muscular tannin structure that sates the palate and adds to the gravitas of this wine.

VINEYARD

The Newton’s purchased the Spring Mountain property in 1977. Working with almost 500 acres of mountainous and heavily forested terrain, they planted a 73-acre vineyard—approximately 3 acres of which was Petit Verdot. The soils are characterized by a complex combination of both sedimentary and volcanic origin, and are moderately fertile and well-drained.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

Abundant rainfall early in the year ensured that the soil stayed moist well into the spring. This helped to set-up healthy canopies along with good flowering and fruit-set. As the season progressed, we saw predictably warm days in summer, but the heat was often mitigated by long-cool foggy mornings. Temperatures became milder as we got closer to the harvest-time and it enabled us to hang the fruit out a bit longer to maximize color, flavor, and structure. Overall, 2019 delivered exceptional fruit with bright acidity and ample texture proving to be an amazing vintage.

VINIFICATION

Preceding any fermentation, a rigorous selection process of bunch sorting by hand, destemming, and subsequent optical sorting occur to make sure that we select only berries of optimal ripeness. These grapes hailed from one single block on Spring Mountain and were vinified in a small stainless tank, 18 days on skins. It was pressed and put to age in French-oak barrels for 18 months, 65% new oak, before being bottled unfiltered.
