The perfume of cedar, juniper, tar and oak mingle with dark fruit, chocolate and plum aromas on the nose. On the palate, this wine is inky, almost brooding, with anise, dark mocha, plum and cassis flavors that are supported by fine tannins. Dark fruit flavors linger on the long finish.

VINEYARD

To produce the 2012 vintage, we sourced grapes from three vineyards located within the Spring Mountain, Mt. Veeder and Yountville appellations. The Spring Mountain fruit expresses an intensity and opulence that is balanced by vibrancy. Mt. Veeder produces fruit with a fine structure and classic Cabernet aromas and flavors. And Yountville offers fruit with a plushness, middle palate and deep, dark fruit flavors and aromas.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

The 2012 growing season was ideal in every way. Gentle winter rains left just enough ground water for the vines to establish a moderate canopy that allowed just the right amount of sunlight to reach each cluster. Moderate daytime temperatures and cool nights from spring to late summer resulted in slow maturation, allowing the fruit to develop superb complexity while retaining bright acidity. When each cluster was at optimum ripeness, harvest began and concluded within a relatively short period.

VINIFICATION

The grapes for The Puzzle were hand-picked. The berries were individually sorted and put into tank where fermentation progressed over four weeks. Following fermentation the wine was aged in 100 percent new French oak barrels for 22 months before being artfully assembled into the final blend and bottled unfiltered.
