The color on this wine is terrific—dark and inky red. The Spring Mountain terroir makes itself known early with aromas of blackberry brambles and cassis, followed by juniper, manzanita and sage high notes. Intense and concentrated, the 2009 The Puzzle on the palate has generous vanilla, mocha and blackberry syrup flavors mingling with toasted cedar, spices, and bittersweet chocolate. The tannins are full and plush, providing tremendous structure for this big, rich wine with its long finish.

VINEYARD

Spread across the steep hillsides of Spring Mountain, the Newton estate is comprised of 112 unique vineyard blocks intertwined with the forested landscape. The individual character of each parcel results from the varying microclimates of the mountaintop’s many contours and rugged terrain providing our winemaker diverse components with which to create wines with complexity.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

The 2009 vintage was textbook perfect. Marked by an even weather pattern and a long growing season filled with warm days and cool nights, the vintage produced beautifully developed fruit. When suddenly the weather turned, with four inches of rain on October 13, we were well under way transforming the grapes, which had already been picked, into an outstanding wine.

VINIFICATION

The lots of wine from our Spring Mountain estate are kept separate in the winery throughout vinification. Like pieces of a puzzle, our winemaker assesses each one and assembles them into masterful blend. The 2009 The Puzzle was aged for 22 months on 100 percent new French oak before being bottled unfiltered.
