VINTAGE CONDITIONS

The 2009 vintage in Napa Valley once again demonstrated Mother Nature’s ability to provide winemakers with luscious, beautiful grapes. The start to the vintage was much less eventful than previous years—in a good way, including threat of frost. As the season progressed, late spring rains delayed irrigation needs and the warm spell in June helped curtail excessive canopy development. Though rainfall was little more than two-thirds of normal for the third year in a row, the timing of the precipitation was on the vine's side. Couple that with the mild and relatively cool growing season, the resulting grape quality was outstanding.

VINIFICATION

We begin on our winemaking work in our hillside vineyards, cultivating the vines using sustainable farming techniques and following nature’s lead as the growing season unfolds. As harvest begins, our winemaker walks the vineyard rows to hand select the fruit at the peak of ripeness. In the cellar, quality and purity are never compromised at the hands of convenience. Newton Unfiltered Merlot is fermented with wild yeast, native to Newton’s Spring Mountain Estate, and is bottled unfiltered to preserve the natural fruit essence and to foster the wine’s unique aroma and flavor.
