The 2008 Unfiltered Merlot opens with much riper notes as a result of the hot, dry season. Black plum is the most prominent fruit note introduced along with cassis. Cedar, delicate aromas of toasted oak and faint brown sugar follow. A faint spice on the nose as well as the other aromas carry to the palate with lingering flavors. A richness of texture provides width to the palate, evenness from front to back, complemented by fine grain tannins.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

Newton met the challenges of a temperamental weather year, with vineyards producing fruit with incredible concentration which, by all accounts, is showing 2008 as a low-yielding, yet high-quality vintage from Napa Valley. Wines revealed from the vintage are very well structured, concentrated and elegant.

VINIFICATION

We begin on the vineyard slopes, cultivating the vines using sustainable farming techniques and following nature’s lead as the growing season unfolds. As harvest begins, our winemaker walks the vineyard rows to hand select the fruit at the peak of ripeness. In the cellar, quality and purity are never compromised at the hands of convenience. Newton Unfiltered Merlot is fermented with wild yeast, native to Newton’s Spring Mountain Estate, and is bottled unfiltered to preserve the natural fruit essence and to foster the wine’s unique aroma and flavor.
