Vintage 2026 Update: Flowering/Fruit Set

There is a quiet moment in the vineyard each year that carries extraordinary weight. It comes just after flowering, when the vines begin to reveal what the season may become. This stage, known as fruit set, is when each individual flower either successfully transitions into a grape or falls away.

It is one of the most delicate and decisive periods in the growing cycle.

On Spring Mountain, fruit set is rarely uniform. The elevation, exposure, and constantly shifting conditions mean that no two blocks behave the same way. This year, that variability was amplified by a significant weather event. During the flowering window, strong winds moved through the property with force. In some areas, the gusts were powerful enough to bring down entire trees.

For the vines, the timing could not have been more critical.

Wind during flowering can disrupt pollination, leading to a natural phenomenon known as shatter. In practical terms, this means fewer berries per cluster, as some flowers never complete the transition. While this reduces overall yield, it also creates a different kind of opportunity.

What remains on the vine is often more balanced. With fewer berries to support, the vine can direct its energy more efficiently. Clusters become looser, allowing for better airflow and more even ripening as the season progresses. In many cases, this results in wines with greater concentration and precision.

This is the duality of mountain viticulture. It is both challenging and deeply rewarding. The same conditions that test the vineyard are often the ones that define its character.

At Newton Vineyard, these moments are not viewed as setbacks, but as part of the natural rhythm of the land. Farming at elevation requires patience, adaptability, and a willingness to accept that nature will always have the final say.

As we continue restoring the estate and replanting the vineyard, this philosophy remains central to everything we do. Each season writes its own story. This year, it is one shaped by resilience, by wind, and by the quiet determination of the vine to carry forward.

Old foundations. New beginnings.
